What is Personal Injury Protection (PIP) in Florida?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) in Florida

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is required in Florida instead of bodily injury liability, like most states require.

PIP coverage pays for medical expenses resulting from a car accident. PIP pays 80% of medical expenses resulting from a car accident.

PIP in Florida also covers 60% of lost wages and reasonable expenses for replacement services like child care, housecleaning, and lawn maintenance.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Breakdown

Extended Personal Injury Protection

You can choose to add higher percentages of coverage when you get a quote with Carter Family Insurance. For example, you can choose to have 100% of medical bills covered and 80% of lost wages (up to the $10k limit).

Personal Injury Protection Deductible

You may opt to have a deductible for your PIP coverage to help lower your premiums. This would mean you are responsible for the deductible before your insurance policy picks up the rest of the $10k in coverage.

Work Loss Exclusion

You may choose to exclude lost wages to lower your premium.

PIP policies provide $10,000 in coverage regardless of fault. This is the “no-fault” part of the policy. Technically, someone else could be at fault, but your policy still has to pay the first $10k in what would typically be bodily injury coverage from the other party’s policy. After the first $10k is covered by your PIP coverage, the other person’s liability will kick in.

Remember, in Florida the other party may not have any liability beyond their PIP coverage, since it is not legally required. This is another reminder as to how important uninsured motorist can be in Florida.

PIP is no doubt a contributing factor to the high price of insurance in Florida. Your policy will have to pay no matter who is at fault.

This coverage extends to the policyholder, family members, and passengers in the insured vehicle, as well as pedestrians and bicyclists injured in the accident.

Medical payment coverage provides coverage to you and your passengers regardless of fault. It is strictly for medical expenses.

It is not necessary to add medical payment coverage in Florida if you have PIP. Personal Injury Protection offers a more broad coverage than medical payment alone.

However, if you want medical payment coverage that exceeds your $10k PIP limit, then you may choose to add that to your policy.
